Understanding the value of land and the costs of land degradation in Cambodia

14 December, 2009 - 17 December, 2009
Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Land resource management is the bedrock of the livelihoods of most of the world’s poor people and a key part of the national economy throughout the developing world. However, the contribution sustainable land management makes to national development and to poverty reduction is often not recognized.

The Global Mechanism (GM) is working in close collaboration with UNDP's Global Environment Facility (GEF)-financed, Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Project to develop an Integrated Financing Strategy (IFS) for mobilizing finance for SLM activities. As part of the IFS development process UNDP has requested the GM to undertake an economic valuation study on the costs of land degradation in Cambodia.
As a member of a global initiative presented at a COP.9 side event, the GM is working in collaboration with international research organizations including the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) the United Nations University (UNU), the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), CAB International (CABI) and other partners on the development of a comprehensive, methodological approach for assessing the total economic value of land, and the costs and benefits of SLM investments.

The work being undertaken in Cambodia will contribute to the global initiative by demonstrating the economic benefits of SLM investments as opposed to the costs of unsustainable business-as-usual land management practices. Particular attention will be paid to the poverty reduction potential of SLM, the opportunities to reverse critical degradation processes in fragile ecosystems and the synergies between national development strategies and SLM-relevant policies. In this context, the GM and SEI will undertake a joint inception mission next week to Cambodia to launch this study using the global evaluation methodology.

News on the outcomes of the mission will be posted here.
