Global Climate Change Alliance

The alliance is a multilateral initiative of the European Commission and EuropeAid, aimed at funding projects for climate change- related opportunities in Least Developed Countries while at the same time promoting dialogue and South-South cooperation.

OBJECTIVE

To help developing countries and Least Developed Countries address climate change issues through technical and financial support; to provide a platform for dialogue between the European Union and recipient countries as well as South-South dialogue and cooperation.

RECIPIENTS

Public and private entities from EU member states.

GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE

Low-income countries, with a focus on Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

FOCUS AREA

This fund focuses on five main topics: (i) the adoption of adaptation measures as a coping strategy for the adverse effect of climate change; (ii) Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) activities; (iii) enhanced participation in Clean Development Mechanism-related activities; (iv) promotion of disaster risk reduction practices; and (v) general mainstreaming of climate change into poverty reduction strategies.

HOW TO APPLY

Eligibility is assessed on a country basis, following an expression of interest from the national governments. The procedure takes into account multiple factors, such as vulnerability to natural disasters, relevance of the agricultural sector on the national economy and the proportion of population at risk. Formal United Nations criteria, such as the Human Development Index, are also part of the assessment.
