Global Canopy Programme

A think-tank of scientific institutions dedicated to the promotion of policy and financial mechanisms for the conservation of biodiversity in tropical forests.

OBJECTIVE

To protect tropical forests and promote the alleviation of pressure on natural resources by making it more economically attractive than overexploitation.

GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE

Global.

FOCUS AREA

The Foundation works for the promotion and implementation of improved policy and financial mechanisms for the protection of ecosystem services delivered by healthy forests, and it is also engaged in the release of the policy publications The Little Book Series, for the dissemination of information related to forest finance.

Activities fall into three main categories: science; policy; and business. Several initiatives are being carried out that are relevant to climate change and the fight against desertification, among which:

  • Community MRV, a community-based mechanism for the monitoring of the health status of tropical forests in Guyana and the implementation of the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) scheme. It is funded by the Norwegian Agancy for Development Cooperation (NORAD);
  • Proactive Investment in Natural Capital (PINC), funded by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, it works for the creation of new flows of financing for forests;
  • The REDD Desk, a platform and database for REDD and REDD+-related initiatives.
