The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is a public-private partnership for the empowerment of smallholder farmers. Partners include the Rockefeller Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
OBJECTIVE
To empower smallholder farmers and achieve sustainable economic growth and food security.
GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE
Burkina Faso; Ethiopia; Ghana; Kenya; Malawi; Mali; Mozambique; Niger; Nigeria; Rwanda; Tanzania; Uganda; and Zambia. Future inclusion of Liberia; Madagascar; Sierra Leone; and South Sudan is currently being discussed.
FOCUS AREA
AGRA works to maximize the productivity of the so-called breadbaskets: areas where the conditions of the soil, rainfall and infrastructure are good and many smallholder farmers operate.
This mechanism works by means of an integrated approach designed to involve both the public and private sector in the following areas:
- Policy making;
- Dissemination of locally adapted varieties of crops and soil fertility technologies; and
- Improved access to the market.
As the majority of smallholder farmers in Africa are women, activities that mainstream gender equality in their agenda are particularly welcome.
In order to receive funding, applicants must submit a concept note, which should be developed into a full proposal at AGRA's invitation. Guidelines on the application procedure are available on the website.
