Strengthening national capacitiy to increase finance for SLM: the potential of climate change financing

Financing mechanisms and instruments emanating from climate change present opportunities and new directions for promoting sustainable land management (SLM) practices. Yet notwithstanding such opportunities, some countries are lagging behind in accessing or fully utilizing such funds and financing mechanisms – due to a large degree - to insufficient human and institutional capacity.

It was the imperative of building such capacity that motivated us at the Global Mechanism (GM), together with our colleagues at the Common Market for East and Southern Africa (COMESA), the Eastern African Community (EAC) and the South African Development Community (SADC), to organize the workshop in July 2012 in Lusaka, Zambia, on identifying and mobilizing potential financial resources through climate change financing mechanisms, bringing home the importance of synergistic, coordinated implementation of the inextricably linked issues of climate change and SLM.
