The Global Mechanism (GM) works with civil society organizations (CSOs) to leverage and mobilize resources for mitigating and preventing desertification in the framework of the UNCCD.
CSOs include development and environment NGOs, farmer and producer organizations, advocacy groups and think tanks. They are recognized by the UNCCD for the important role they play at policy and community levels and for the support they provide to farmers and producers in their efforts to mitigate and prevent desertification through sustainable land management (SLM) practices
CSOs provide services to marginalized communities, pilot and upscale incentive mechanisms for investing in SLM, promote the interests of small scale farmers and pastoralists, mobilize finance, and advocate for public and private investments in integrated, cross-sectoral, and participatory land management.
The GM supports UNCCD implementation at national level by facilitating the development of a package of interventions to be financed and implemented by multiple stakeholders.
Given the important role of CSOs as development stakeholders and the significant resources they mobilize and channel, the GM promotes the engagement of CSOs in the coordinated national effort to respond to the land degradation challenge.
Interested CSOs are invited to participate in elaborating and implementing country frameworks for sustainable land management. The GM identifies local and international CSOs active in relevant sectors and assesses their role, interests and capacities. The GM also promotes CSO participation in multi-stakeholder consultations to develop the framework and programmes, and encourages CSO engagement in implementation. In addition, the GM has a brokering role, facilitating partnerships between CSOs and development cooperation agencies and foundations. The GM may also provide strategic, technical and financial support to strengthen the capacity of CSOs to engage effectively.
