Milestone in Zambia's natural resource management efforts

- Never
The Government of Zambia has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Governments of Denmark, Finland and Norway and the United Nations System on implementing the Environment and Natural Resources Management Mainstreaming Programme (ENRMMP).
The Programme aims to improve coordination and enhance implementation capacity in the environment and natural resource management sector and constitutes a bold attempt at implementing a sector-wide approach.“The ENRMMP is not a stand-alone programme, but strongly anchored in the Fifth National Development Plan, supporting its principles, priorities and objectives”, said Hon. Catherine Namugala, Minister of Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources, during the MoU signing ceremony in Lusaka on 13 February 2009.
The Cooperating Partners (CPs), committed to the principles of aid harmonization, are aligning their support by pooling their financial and technical support for ENRMMP implementation.
As one of the CPs, the Global Mechanism is supporting the ENRMMP in view of the scope it offers to position and address the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the sustainable land management (SLM) agenda.
The ENRMMP is therefore a major achievement and offers strategic entry points for mobilizing and leveraging financial resources for UNCCD/SLM-related activities in Zambia.
